Hello and Welcome to Winchester News Online.

A record number of people in Hampshire are being convicted for hate crimes, such as threatening gay people or racial abuse. Almost 1,000 reported cases have ended in successful prosecution and the police are pushing for more victims to come forward. Our Crime Reporter Brooke Perriam investigates.

  • What is the evidence that police need to secure convictions because most victims still think that they will not be believed?
  • What more can be done for people that are unsure of whether to come forward?
  • Is there a rise in hate crime or is it a case of more people reporting the crime?

‘I don’t want that noise in this restaurant’ those were the words of a manager in Eastleigh, where a disabled teenager was asked to leave for making too much noise. Megan Brennan was enjoying a farewell meal with her family and carers. Toby Cruse has been speaking with her mother Helen.

Hampshire firefighters held a four day strike as part of national industrial action. Southern Water is fitting 160,000 water meters in the next year. Our environment correspondent Nadidja Parker reports.

A Hampshire family whose daughter died suddenly has started an online petition to screen all young people for fatal heart problems on the NHS. The family needs 100,000 signatures by next March to send the petition to parliament. Callum Warren-Piper has this.

Hampshire County Councillors have handed over control of museums and galleries to the Hampshire Cultural Trust. The trust will gain investments to try and increase tourism in Winchester. Cllr Rob Humby: “Museums and art galleries are a key element of Winchester’s and Hampshire’s visitor economy and the new Hampshire Cultural Trust is set to boost their contribution still further.”

A Bishopstoke man is the UK’s number one pharmacist after receiving a Royal Pharmaceutical Society award. The award puts Sid Dajni above 40,000 other pharmacists. Lauren Clarke reports.
